I’m 21 years old. and I’ve never worn contacts before in my life. However, when I’m working with film equipment, I’ve found that wearing glasses can get in the way.

It’s not that I’m blind, but I have astigmatism in my eye, which should be corrected with eyewear over the next few years. When I visited the friendly folks over at College Optical Express in Centennial Place, I figured that the contact thing would be a piece of cake. Boy, was I wrong.

It’s just a little piece of flexible, plasticesque product. The thing should be able to just pop on my eye and stay there. But no, it has to pop back, flex on, flex off, and drop to the ground several times before I ever get it to stay on my finger. I have narrow eyes, and my top eyelashes get in the way.

They say it’s as easy as riding a bike or tying your shoes. Eventually it’s supposed to come naturally to you. But until that day comes, it really stinks to try and figure it out.

I guess it feels the same way as you prepare to graduate. I’m waiting to hear back from graduate schools while applying to jobs at the same time, because who really knows where we’ll all end up in this economy. But until you get out there and actually do it, you leave your comfort zone kicking and screaming, scared to make the next step.

So today, I’m going to go back to College Optical Express and try again. It may take a few minutes, hours, or even a few days. But eventually, when the connection is made, I’ll say I knew I could all along.

If only life could work that way.
