New Georgia Southern Head Football Jeff Monken announced 23 signees on college football’s National Signing Day Wednesday afternoon, at the Parish Football Center.
This marks Monken’s first recruiting class at GSU and his first ever as a head coach.
Monken joins the program after spending the last nine years as an assistant under current Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson.
Among the recruits Monken brings in includes 13 players on offense, nine players on defense and one two-way player.
20 of the recruits are from right here in the Peach State while two come from Florida and running back Aaron Fisher who comes to Statesboro from Tulsa, Okla.
“As it goes in recruiting, you try to get all the kids you want and we were able to do that today,” said Monken. “We made sure that we could get these kids here and get them on campus to talk to some of our players. We wanted to make sure that these guys were the right fit for our program.”
After the making the decision to remain as the slot backs coach at Georgia Tech until after the Orange Bowl, Monken had to act fast when it came to recruiting, having just over three weeks to get a class together.
"Our staff did a really great job getting in here in January with not a lot of time to recruit. They did a great job of going out and representing our school and that paid off by getting some quality players and some quality people.”
Among the most notable signees are three recruits at the quarterback position.
With Monken’s option style offense, it is likely that the Eagle fans will see a different face at the quarterback position for the 2010 season.
Julian Suber out of Brookwood High School in Lawrenceville leads the quarterback list. Suber was named the 2009 Gwinnett All-County team at quarterback, although most of his senior season saw him playing at running back.
We evaluated Julian as a quarterback when I was at Georgia Tech and coach [Brent] Davis brought him up when I got down here and I knew he would be a good fit for our program,” Monken said.
“He’s extremely talented and undersized at about 5-9 and 160 pounds soaking wet. He’s got a long way to go to fill out physically and get where he needs to be, but he’s got a lot of speed and a great ability to make people miss so we’re real excited about him as an athlete. We are going to try to start him at quarterback but if he doesn’t work out, there are many other positions where we can find a place for him.”
The other two recruits at QB are Ezayi Youyoute from Hardee High School in Wauchula, Fl. and Jerick McKinnon from Sprayberry High School in Marietta.
Check back soon for a full list of all of the recruits and pick up Thursday’s George-Anne for a complete analysis of this year’s class.
