Lady Eagles fall short against Wofford PDF Print E-mail

The Georgia Southern University women’s basketball team lost to the Wofford College Terriers on Monday. The Eagles were out-rebounded, out-shot, out-ran and overall outplayed, falling 70-55.

Playing its last game in January, the Eagles were looking to close out its best month this season with a win. Wofford is a team that GSU played very well against and beat back on Jan. 2. However, the team just didn’t have what it took to topple the Terriers in Spartanburg, S.C. Field goal percentage, three-point percentage, defensive rebounds and assists were all among season lows for the team.

GSU finished the contest with a lowly 20% percent from beyond the arc, with only three out of 15 shots finding their targets, in addition to only 18 defensive rebounds to Wofford’s 45 and only six assists to Wofford’s 18. Leading the Eagles in points was freshman Anna Claire Knight with 11, followed by three players with seven points. Knight also finished the game with five rebounds, the game high for the Eagles. The loss to the Terriers snaps GSU’s three-game win streak, a season high.

The defense continued to play well for the Eagles, with 10 steals and forcing 29 turnovers. Although some may say that the best offense is a good defense, that offense must still be able to put up points, especially when being handed the ball 29 extra times in a game.

Nevertheless the Eagles must bounce back by Saturday for what may be the biggest home game of the season versus Appalachian State University. Head coach Ruasty Cram will have nearly a whole week to get his team ready for the Mountaineers who defeated GSU 64-45 in Boone, N.C. on Dec. 1.  The Eagles must shift their focus to moving the ball effectively between each other, as well as into the hoop.
