The Georgia Southern University men’s basketball team’s struggles on the road continue as the fell Thursday night to Samford University 57-55 falling to 6-4 in Southern Conference play. The difference in the game was once again free throws. Unlike the double overtime victory against The Citadel on Monday night, GSU was on the wrong side of the free throw attempts. GSU went only 6-10 from the line while Samford made 15-21, the difference in the game. Sophomore guard Jelani Hewitt had an outstanding night in the loss posting a game high 23 points and seven rebounds. Hewitt shot 5-10 from behind the three-point line, one three short of tying a career high he set earlier this season. He also had two assists and one steal. Sophomore Eric Ferguson had 14 points to go with four rebounds. Senior guard Willie Powers III contributed with six assists. The Eagles shot well from the floor at 48.9 percent and held the Bulldogs to a lowly 39.1 percent, but the team turned the ball over 17 times. A category it has recently had success in. For the Bulldogs, sophomore center Drew Windler led the team with eighteen points, while senior guard Jeffery Merritt had 8 points and 7 rebounds. The Eagles will be back on the road to face the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. GSU defeated the Mocs at Hanner Fieldhouse 84-76 on Dec. 1 in the first game of SoCon play. The Eagles will need to pick up the win to keep up with the early favorite in the conference, Davidson College, who remained undefeated in the SoCon, picking up their ninth conference win against Chattanooga on Thursday night.
