A Georgia Southern student who died following an intramural game at the RAC Wednesday evening had an undetected heart condition according to a Bulloch County official.

According to Bulloch County Deputy Coroner Chuck Francis, 20-year-old Alexander Pace of Oxford, Ga., suffered from a congenital heart defect. He added that there was no way of knowing that Pace had the condition and that there was no family history of heart conditions.

On Wednesday night, Pace, a student in the College of Business Administration, came out of an intramural game at the RAC and reported feeling ill. He made his way to the bench, where he collapsed soon after. Emergency Services were called and athletic trainers administered First Aid procedures, according to University spokesperson Betsy Nolen.

Pace was then transported by EMS to the emergency room at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

On Thursday, Nolen said that the university offers its "heartfelt condolences" to the family and friends of Pace.

Friends of Pace also shared their condolences and memories through comments on www.gadaily.com.

One visitor, Megan Wilson commented that "Alex was an incredibly sweet person and I don't think he ever made an enemy. He was bright, funny, and amazingly talented. He will be dearly missed."
